nylon macs

Post by angelamac »

I have been watching this forum as well as contributing occasionally for some time now and get the decided impression that I must be one of the few nylon raincoat lovers here. Like most rainwear they are increasingly hard to come by and I think as mentioned before Rainmac in Sussex are about the only stockist of nylon macs left. They are certainly well used to visits from guys as well as girls and always encourage trying on their coats before buying. They are also reasonably waterproof.
I must confess that my macs are mostly ladies as I to wear ladies clothes when possible and I always now wear a ladies coat while out most of the time. About the only nylon mac now available in shops generally is the rain jacket. I got a great purchase last week in Sainsburys of all places. They have although I think this week nearly all sold out, a nylon jacket in three colours with white spots, attached hood and waist and hood ties. They had a good range of sizes, I got a black in size 18 which is a fairly generous fit. They are quite light weight and really rustily and the surprising thing is with what appears to be a lovely new type of inside surface finish completely waterproof. I wore it out in some really heavy rain and was completly dry inside but being a jacket my bottom half got wet and so it was back to my long red Rainmac.
I would be interested to know how many nylon mac lovers visit this forum and to hear of their experiences and views.

Nylon macs

I just get so "excited"...if that is the right word for it when I wear a nylon mac or see someone in one

I have been a member on the Rainwear Forum for a couple of years although a mac "enthusiast" since the age of six...now in my mid sixties...and I have seen little mention of nylon macs so thanks to Angelamac for raising the subject of Nylon macs

I love all macs designed for ladies having quite a few in my collection but never thought of wearing any other items of clothing designed for ladies other than macs

So what is it about a nylon mac.....only those who have experienced the feel of them can tell you

I wear a man"s nylon mac when I go out...indoors and even in bed a nylon mac designed for ladies

Rainmac has been mentioned in other articles on Rainwear Forum..not only for nylon macs but other types as well,,,,,good quality thus a slightly higher price

So where have I got my collection of nylon macs from

Not wanting to tell my life story but I was married...we split up in 1999(on good terms)...my (then) wife was an agent for several mail order companies and asked me if I wanted to continue receiving the catalogues and being the agent

Even in the late 1990s these catalogues were offering rainwear including nylon macs

I saw one...a light blue one..."my size"...ordered it...tried it on when I received it and yes I still have it and still wear it

Other nylon macs...welll ebay is my main supplier although of late I have experienced a shortage of nylon macs on there

But bargains are to be found......a red hooded nylon mac...£6.00..."Dannimac"

A Trenchcoat style from C&A in off white....£5.00

Another Trenchcoat style nylon mac from BHS.....£5.50

Also I bought a man"s nylon mac on there...brand new...£3.99

I also bought a "rain Jacket" designed for ladies in green with a nice hood...knee length from a firm called JD Williams

Nice to wear but I love the longer(below the knee) rainwear with any macs I wear

Hopefully more "Nylon mac enthusiasts" will contribute to this article

What attracted them to nylon macs...their first nylon mac(s)...where they got their first nylon mac etc

I have met with one other nylon mac "enthusiast but that is another story

Looks like today and Thursday are days when my nylon mac will not be in use(except at bedtime) and to unwind indoors but Friday and into the weekend more mac wearing

I suppose my one dream is to walk out with a fellow mac enthusiast in a nice nylon mac...the one I met paid me a home visit

Good morning Angela

Yes Rainmac in Sussex do seem to be the only shop that sell Nylon macs unless you count Target Dry items and a little shop called Travelling light that do lightwight macs and jackets.

There are a few Nylon mac wearers on this forum (me included)

Ebay seems to be the place to purchase macs one seller was doing ladies Nylon macs for about £13 and when ordered they took three days to come. They are based in England so quite good really Four colours and lots of different sizes.

Keep writing

I finally got to go out in the thunderous downpour today dressed in my long nylon mac, nylon rainpants and water shoes!!! I had spoken recently about my own frustrations of always being busy at work or with my kids or just bad timing for some of these great rainstorms designed for us enthusiasts of rainwear. Having nothing on underneath, the wet nylon shimmered and clung to my body, the rain was pounding down. I loved seeing the other people scrambling for cover while I sat there content on a park bench and if they complain or comment on the rain I just respond "I love it"!!!! The icing on the cake would have been for my girlfriend to have joined me but our work schedules conflicted. CAN'T WAIT FOR MORE RAIN!!!! Yesterday I enjoyed 30 minutes of soaking, black shimmering nylon on my skin and then the rain let up so I went home and told my girlfriend about my WET NYLON EXPERIENCE!! She knows how much I love rainwear!!!!

Cotton Traders also do a long Pak A Mac Nylon coat for ladies & gents - I have a green one , my wife has the same colour but hers is Target Dry & is not the Pak A Nac style

I too am an avid nylon mac wearer. i yearn for the day i see many, many more people willing to wear their mac, but alas those days are long gone.

My own experiences include being made to wear one by mother until i was in the 6th form aged 16 or 17 i guess. I'd dread being dragged to the outfitter for another nylon mac when all my friends were allowed to wear trendy jackets or anoraks. This was in 1984 where it was moat uncommon to wear one, but my mother would hear none of my protects - it was a nylon mac come what may .

And inevitably this trip would result in my having to wear it home despite what ithought

Most interesting to read of "Rives" dread at being dragged to the outfitters

Now I can go back 30 years(early 1950s)and recall not nylon macs but plastic ones...the better quality ones being the genuine "Pacamac" or the cheaper ones where they ripped under the arm or the button hole tore...Happy days!

If I recall in that era it was commonplace for all youngsters to wear a plastic mac as lightweight outerwear for the unexpected summer showers

Boys in their mostly back...some grey ones..the girls in their somewhat prettier colours

Maybe one reason why I preferred (and still do) the macs designed for the fairer sex

Going on from Primary School at the age of 11 to Secondary School or the brainier ones amongst us going to Grammar School it was commonplace for the plastic macs continuing to be worn

And leaving school as we did at 15 (the less brainy ones) plastic macs continued to be worn and many of us mac enthusiasts have continued to wear them and find them exciting to wear many years on

I can well imagine the dread of you going to school in a new nylon mac when all around you had the trendy jackets and anoraks but no getting away from it..I bet you were the smartest in the school

Whilst on the subject of schools brings back my memories of the school gaberdine mac...Loved by some but loathed by many

To me this was a smart item of outerwear seeing the whole school dressed the same...now they go to school in a variety of colours...a variety of styles whereas at my schools(Primary as well as Secondary )it was part of the school uniform in the cooler days...plastic macs were optional but many wore them

Yes we all yearn of the day when we see more macs of any description being worn

Me...a mac enthusiast for many years will along with others keep the mac wearing a reality if only for our own enjoyment

Thanks for replying. i well remember those trips as we would walk past all the shops selling the latest fashions and marched instead to the traditional outfitters . inside i would be told to stop complaining and that i would "would be having a nylon mackintosh come what may. I don't care what your friends wear".

We would always be attended to by a fussy and overbearing assistant who would warmly encourage my mother's dress code approach . She would produce a series of different sizes, lengths, styles and colours (slate grey, blue or brown). I would then receive a series of instructions as I'd be buttoned up in a series of hideous macs. "keep still","chin up","stop struggling". Eventually after what would seem an eternity when my mother would insist on me trying on 6 or 7 different macs and made to walk around the shop so she could judge the suitability, a decision would be made on my behalf, usually involving a mac with "room for growth" - meaning it would fall to my calves and the sleeves would covermost of my hands.

I would then be made to wear the mac home - "you may as well get used to it as you'll be wearing it to school on Monday". I would try to complain naturally and would sometimes refuse to wear it, particularly as i got older if i recall. In there situations, Mother would button me up in a no nonsense sort of way and march me home by the hand.

Happy to share recollections further if interest exists
