Cleaning PVC rainwear with liquid detergent

Post by Pvc Vinyl Enthusiast »

Hello everyone!

I have a question about cleaning PVC rainwear. Does liquid detergent (washing-up liquid) degrade the PVC and/or the plasticisers over time? Can hot (about 70 degrees Celsius) water leach out the plasticiser over time? Here's how I remove oils and dirt from glossy and glass clear PVC rainwear:

1. I prepare a dilute solution of washing-up liquid in lukewarm water and agitate vigorously to produce lots of foam.
2. I fully immerse the rainwear item in the solution and gently clean the plastic with a soft kitchen cloth (I avoid using rough, abrasive cloths because they produce permanent micro scratches on the smooth surface of the plastic).
3. I thoroughly rinse off every last trace of detergent solution with fresh lukewarm water. Once the detergent has been completely removed, the surfaces of the glossy PVC begin to cling together (or 'block'), and the rainwear becomes 'noisy' again.
4. I allow the rainwear to dry naturally over the course of a few hours. I never expose the rainwear to direct sun (UV can attack the PVC and plasticisers).

Is there a better way to clean PVC? My method appears to work really well.

Yes there is...

I get my cleaners from www.Freshanaorganic.com
Its cheap and will not fade or take away the feel of the PVC or Latex.
