I guess it's the queuing in the open air that does it. Fiona Bruce herself often sports a smart line in rainwear even if she never seems to get the material quite right.
I was amazed to see, whilst watching a different antique themed TV show, that Land of Lost Content (National Museum of British Popular Culture), Craven Arms, Shropshire features amongst its exhibits a considerable display of Stephanie Bowman slimwear from the 1960's. This was, in essence, plastic underwear designed to make the wearer sweat. Adverts for this product were, alongside those for South Bucks Rainwear and incontinence/bedwetting advice from "Nurse Marsh", stalwarts of the newspaper small ads pages in the '60's and early '70's.
The antiques show strikes again...
