I have a collection of plastic macs. All of them are see-through as that is what I like. Some of the labels inside say "100% PVC", others say "100% Vinyl". During my almost 70 years of loving plastic macs, whenever I hear the words "plastic mac" it conjures up a mental image of a see-through plastic mac and the words "vinyl raincoat" always conjures up an image of a shiny raincoat which is not see-through due to the fact that it would have a cotton backing. Of course, not all un-backed plastic is see-through.

I don't know what the answer to this question is but it seems to me that "plastic" is a general term which encompasses PVC, Vinyl, the dreaded polythene and, no doubt, numerous other types of plastic.

BTW, one of my gripes when reading the stories on this site is that the author might merely mention "a PVC mac". I know that us readers are expected to use our own imaginations bu t I wish that more information was provided such as..... see-through ? semi-see-through ? transparent ? glass clear ? shiny ? soft ? stiff ? smooth ? colour ? scarf ? collar or hood ? drawstring ? belt ? long ? short ? buttons ? press studs ? zip ? Perhaps I'm asking too much. And, before anyone jumps down my throat, I am planning to publish a story of my own.

Taffmac, I know what you mean. In my story "Broken Down" the central charcter is a see-through plastic jacket (others might think that Suzi is the main character, but that would be missing the point). Rather than describe the garment in detail all in one go I try tom throw in extra information as it becomes relevant to the story line, so later we find it has a hood and draw strings for tightening it. I mention that it is soft and (like you) plastic conjures up unbacked material in my mind. I would interested to know if, by the end of the story, you have enough information to know all about the garment, or am I missing some vital information that you need to complete the mental picture? I included heavy PVC rainsuits as I know there are people here with a liking for those, but I suspect that my treatment of them was not as satisfactory as they are not so much my cup of tea. Looking forward to reading you story in time.

Answering the above - PVC is an acronym for Poly Vinyl Chloride - it's chemical composition is similar to that of other plastics.

As wikipedia says the basic material of satin ist normally silk, but cheeper products may use polyester or viskose. pvc ist a specific type of plastic.
