Last night and this morning we had 2.25 inches of heavy rain here in Maine. I have been home from work for almost 2 weeks recovering from surgery and I took the opportunity to put on my boots and wore two of my London Fog coats last evening to go out in the relentless rain for some hour long walks. (A side benefit of the walks was that I could advance my recovery) I felt like I was walking to school in similar weather October weather 45 years ago. I and the London Fogs got pretty drenched but still stood up to the weather pretty well due to the trademark “third barrier” and zip-in lining. I was exciting myself walking along the sidewalk imagining that I was just sent to school in my long raincoat with my Mom making sure I was covered with a winter bomber hat over my ivory raincoat for the downpours. Satisfied that I was dressed as best I could for the pouring rain, she finally sent me out in the deluge saying: “Oh, you are going to get wet” as this was just an expected part of life and you learned to rely on your raincoat no matter how hard it was raining and that you’d be out in the heavy rain for an hour or so to get to school.
In between walks I came home to put a vintage Sears Miami Dolphins reversible PVC poncho over the London Fog to experience the buckets of rain so attired. I often dressed this way for school when “rain, heavy at times” was forecast and I would need a fully waterproof barrier against incorrigible sheets of rain.
