Very Sticky PVC

Post by Hugo »

I recently got a poncho made from PVC with a very nice dull inside but a shiny outside which is horribly sticky, it even sticks to itself - outside to outside, not outside to inside. What could I do to make it less sticky?

I am sure, talcum powder would work, but I already figured on other stuff, that talcum powder is absolutely unsticky and creates a mess all over the place.

In the meantime, I have washed the poncho with mild soap, haven't checked yet. It seemed a bit less sticky when it was wet, have to see, how it is when dry again. I'll report and hope for further suggestions, in case it didn't help.

My pvc mac was very sticky when I first bought it but after wearing it a few times the stickiness seems to have worn off. I think it's something to do with the plasticizer they use when making pvc.

I love the picture with the two women in raincoats, rainboots and umbrellas!

The shower didn't help much, but perhaps I didn't apply enough soap. I also wrote to PVC-U-Like, the manufacturer and got the following answer:

"The best thing we can recommend if you find a garment to be quite sticky is to wash to garment in warm soapy water and leave to dry hanging in a warm room or on a cool setting on a tumble dryer for a few seconds, this softens the PVC and allows it to hang better and become less sticky. It could be that the garment has a lot of silicone spray on it as this is what is used when making the garment and this can cause the material to be quite sticky until washed."

By the way, it took PVC-U-Like a single day to reply, while the seller, a company in Germany, still hasn't answered after more than two weeks!

I had this trouble with chaps and jeans . it was quite impossible to put them in boots . I bought plastic polish for car ( a shiny one). There are some without perfumes to keep the intoxicating smell of the pvc. Those plastic polish for car are perfect to avoid the raincoat to be sticky. I think you can also use the spray for latex but it is more expensive.
