large collections and FOMO

Post by reversiblepete »

So having had the luxury of having a wonderful wife that has explored, supported and endured this fetish with me, I've had the opportunity to try out lots of different styles, fabrics and brands through the years.

We have many many items from pvc-u-like (lots of jellies)
pvc backed nylon from Peter storm and regatta.

We've explored heavier stuff from ocean, 66 north, grundens, guy cotten and farmerrain.
Many vintage items of all sorts.

Exploring all the fabrics, the feel the weight, the aroma and we've started to know what we like and don't. It's made it both easier to not buy so many differnt ebay listings but has increased buying of things we do like.

Our collection is far too big now and has to be culled back to realistically what we use in and out the bedroom regularly and the time before our children are a bit more cognizant and we have to cull down to a handful of fetish and practical items is lessening every year.

How big are your collections?
How do you manage your fetish in a shared household?
How do you not buy every single colour of your favourite items?
Where/how do you store it all?

I'm particularly struggling with FOMO or the fear of missing out. It's a term that's hot in the boardgame scene at the moment and drives big Kickstarters for games.
I have this issue with rainwear at the moment. I'm really struggling not to buy more of the things that hit the right buttons.

I've been burned many times now and have missed out on so many items because an item is discontinued or a fabric change or the shop has folded.
I missed out on Aprilrain items, alt colours of my favorite 66 north light smock. I missed out on the grundens smocks that farmerrain sold (if any of you have one you could part with please let me know).
I fell in love with grundens atlas jackets which are now discontinued.
I always seem to find just the right thing at the end of its run.

I could easily spend thousands buying up all the items on farmerrain. At the very least I need the full length "retro coat" before it disapears but what colour to choose when all of them drive me mad.

How do you guys cope with your addiction, how do you rationalise adding items to a collection that's already too large vs the regret of missing out?
Do you have any regrets from missing out on items?

Sorry for the long post and all the questions just this has been really weighing on my mind as I battle not to go crazy for more shiney farmerrain items and sorel rain wedges.

Would love to hear about your collections.

Farmers rain seems the in thing at the moment and seem value for money.
I would like the Blue Farmersrain retro coat.
It seems good value to me
But we have loads of stuff that has not been worn as yet so buying more is a no no at the minute!

Hello ReversiblePete,

Great post. It shows you are struggling with a balance in your life. (You said that you are struggling with FOMO or the fear of missing out. It's a term that's hot in the board game scene at the moment and drives big Kickstarters for games.
I have this issue with rain-wear at the moment. I'm really struggling not to buy more of the things that hit the right buttons.)

I actually have the same problem: fear of missing something. Something is never always there if you here on this Earth more then a few years!

Q1) How big are your collections?
My collection is broken into several segments:
10 rain coats a women would wear shopping or to a formal situation http://rainwearcentral.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=11730
3 rubber maid uniforms
3 cloth maid uniforms
3 heavy rubber gloves
10 rain boots such as Hunters and off brands

Q2) How do you manage your fetish in a shared household?

Over time I had to toss over 20 very rare Wippette coats that can never be found again. Now a days as we grew older things flattened out. The wife understands and all is well. Lately I work at home dressed in my Black PROS Rain Pantsuit and a dress shirt! Today I an wearing a long rubber skirt and rubber tee shirt. I ran the vacuum cleaner all over the house and worked up a nice rubber odor. The wife is slightly displeased but the house is now clean. Life goes on.

Q3) How do you not buy every single color of your favorite items?

I simply stop: my God is first, my family second and my hobby is last in line.

Q4) Where/how do you store it all?

I have a complete ROOM with all of my coats, uniforms, wigs, boot, ect, ect, ect.

Q5) How do you guys cope with your addiction?

It comes and goes. Sometimes it is impossible and I get dressed up as a CAR HOP in the rain and go to the local pub for a hamburger.

Other times I just shrug and it leaves me. There are some very specific things you can do; send me a private message.

Q6) How do you rationalize adding items to a collection that's already too large vs the regret of missing out?

I cannot. I have to give away or sell something to make room for more. I already have a complete room and it is very crowded in there. The odor of PVC is HUGE!

Q7) Do you have any regrets from missing out on items?

Yes I do. I wish I had managed my life better when I was younger and bought more of the rare Wippette coats. Now a day I have my eyes on the heavy stuff like PROS items but they are so expensive. I want this suit in BLUE and I want the matching cape.

My pvc raincoat collection has gotten out of hand. I have over 150 raincoats, trenchcoats, one piece rainsuits, 2 piece rainsuits, sauna suits, pyjamas, plastic pants, bloomers, shorts, gloves, sleepsacks, loads of shiny pool floaties, shower curtains, table covers, shiny boots, a few of those glass clear pvc umbrellas, shoulder length rubber chemical gloves, pvc hoods with rebreather bags, and a lovely pvc hazmat suit.

I had a huge collection of cagoules, i bought what ever I found in my size in charity shops and would spend days off hunting them out when they were in short supply on ebay.
Now i am very choosy, i sold over 80 cagoules in my old shop that sold outdoor gear, was never surprised if someone bought more than one. A couple of people i could tell had a liking for cagoules but i never let on, a few folks asked where i got them all from. I always said i could get them in bulk, it was sad to see some of them go, others i wasn’t too bothered about.

Now i have a few favourites, collect kway, peter storm, old regatta, kag in a bag, TKO and some oddities. I am being drawn to jeantex amd sorry rainwear pieces at the mo. Have a couple adult sizes all in one nylon rainsuits, theres one brand i really want to buy before the stop making them, scaled up versions of their kids ones with a regatta stormbreak type of material unlined.
Lets get swishy!

@MissRachel Fantastic in depth reply, I wish I had the space in my house for a whole room of fun times. My dream scenario is to have a dedicated sex room with the walls full of hung up coats.
although our bedroom is essentially that but it would be lovely to have them all on racks.
Nice items and practical use items get hung up there is a quick access box under the bed with kinky or rainwear dedicated to sex. Then we have suitcases under the bed of stuff that's not loved as much or doesn't fit.
But often there is a plethora coats on the floor because we are often to lazy to pic up after messy fun.
We are quite used to the smell but every now and again the olfactory resets or the sun warms the room up in the morning there is a lovely aroma to the room it's pretty intoxicating to wake up to.

I've had a large pile of items to sell for a few years now, but not got round to listing it all. It's really hard to cull items, often something goes in the sell pile to then bring it out and give it one last try to fall in love with something again or gain a new appreciation to something I wasn't fussed about before.

It's going to be so hard to cull it down to a handful of items in a few years time.

Sounds wonderfully sexy. Rebreather hoods is something I don't have yet that I want to add to the collection and I'd love to add rebreather kit to our gas mask items, we currently have 2 masks, an anesthesia mask and two tubes with bottles and pumps for poppers.
And I really want to add some more tubes adaptors and rebreather bags.

I don't have a firm number count on my how many pieces are in my rainwear collection, but it is large. I have multiple raincoats, rainsuits, and other pieces hanging in my walk-in closet. Additionally, I have 3 storage bins of full of rainwear under my bed, and a coat rack by the door in my room where I have some of my Grundens rainwear hanging. Over the years I have gone from random buying, to a more focused buying. I attribute this to finding out what types of rainwear I like along with the material. I think it's important to have a collection full of gear you like and wear often. I can't say that I've ever experienced FOMO when buying rainwear, but I do get bummed out if a seller on eBay does not ship to where I live or has weird payment methods (eBay Germany loves to do bank transfers only!). Recently on eBay, there were a number of vintage Grundens items that popped up and the seller only shipped within the EU. Because I live in the United States, unfortunately I missed out on that gear.

Overall, it is important to manage your collection and know when you need to let stuff go to a new home. Right now I am in the midst of reorganizing my collection, and there are numerous items I am going to be parting ways with because I rarely wear them. I can't justify owning rainwear I never wear!
