Raincoats Missing

Been out this morning in my black trenchcoat from jaeger on a very wet morning and not one single person down my local high street is wearing a raincoat ,only me and one or two anoraks on others .I cannot work out why this is the case .Are raincoats so unfashionable that no one can be bother to buy one or they dont know where to buy one. I find it very strange and yet on the web any coat that looks a bit different or practical seems to sell very fast.

I have noticed the same thing.

Take a look in my "Going to Work" video series. I have pictures of me going to work on the train and not one person thinks to wear the right clothing. I am on the bus and no one thinks to wear the right clothing. I think clothing styles are so tightly controlled by HELLYWOOD people just are shamed into wearing next to nothing in the freezing, pouring rain. They do not want to look "uncool" I guess.

No one but people working on the telephone lines or working the garbage trucks wear rain suits in our part of the world.

It's the same in Australia as well; barely anyone except workers & fishos wear decent rainwear nowadays. Even at the footy, 95% of seats are under cover.

We've become a nation of cosseted, whining softies.

I suppose it's down to the fact that the Gore-tex material has taken over in the last 30 years or so. No doubt it keeps the rain out ok, but it doesn't have the same appeal as shiny rainwear.

I prefer to wear Helly Hansen Workwear, I would wear an HH Mandel jacket and trousers while getting in and out of the car, Today wore my HH Gale Jacket for shopping. Hate the light stuff that stores seem to sell. My brands that I also like to wear are HH, Guy Cotten and Tretorn for travelling on holidays etc. Saves on weight, plus also allows me to buy new gear if needed.

I have noticed this time and time again.

It is like you "appear stronger" if you get soaking wet and then have something to complain about. In the video (see above) when I got to my cube at work the women across the hall came in soaking wet. She proceeded to pull her shoes off and wool suit coat with utter disdain. She then muttered to herself how wet and cold she was. She then looked up across the hall at me. Hanging on the hook was that PROS Rain Suit in the video and I was still wearing my red rubber boots. My feet were warm and dry. I was ready to attack my work load. She said well you look happy! I was happy!

It makes no sense. Through out the day I was getting questions as to how I got those lovely red, rubber boots. I just said I went to Wal-Mart in the women's shoe section and bought them. Which brings me full circle. I can get pretty, rubber rain boots at Wal-Mart but had to mail order the PROS rain suit from over seas. Why? It gets cold and wet in Dallas, TX in January and we are thought of as a hot, dry state.

I believe the public cant be bothered and would sooner get wet .Is it a trendy image that is trying to be promoted that rainwear is not fashionable , I dont know .Years ago there were lots of different style of raincoats to choose from, we had a local ladies outfitters during 60s and 70s that stocked mainly raincoats so you could go and get fitted for a proper raincoat and the shop was famous for stock variety . But now there are lots of nice raincoats for sale out there and some very expensive ones to ,the trouble is all the stores and shops sell the same raincoats so if you dont get your size in one store there are plenty others to try.It gets boring shopping .If you see a nice raincoat you like you have to by it quickly before it sells out fast as I have discovered in the past and I was explaining this to the assistant when I bought my Hobbs trenchcoat.Interestingly many raincoats now are gender neutral so it doesnt matter if men buy ladies rainwwear no excuse not to have a coat for wet weather.Its about time the fashion industry got to grips with a lost market.

You are right. Years ago many department stores like Sears and JC Penny had RACKS of lady's and men's rain wear you would pick for things like going to work in, going to church wearing, going out to diner, just any occasion.
