Is there some captcha in place or something to prevent them from creating accounts automatically?
I cannot imagine them doing this by hand all the time.

We did have something like this set up in order to allow us to manually approve every application, but it became so much work that we gave up. My inbox was overwhelmed every day.

It's far easier to delete the odd spammer or two we get every week.
