Rubber bedsheet use

Post by jane mackintosh »

At what age were you when you ceased having rubber or plastic safety sheets on your bed?

I don’t know exactly, but as a bed wetter, I am pretty sure it was at least five, possibly longer. I know I was kept in plastic pants for much longer than was usual, and even when young, I loved looking at and touching the baby pants stored in the airing cupboard. Would I love to still be using PVC sheets? Absolutely, but alas it is not to be!

As a child I had a rubber sheet on my bed from time to time usually if I was unwell or had wet it in the recent past. When I lived on my own I happily put a plastic sheet on my beds too.

Back in the 1970's one prominent member of the then International Mackintosh Society was able to get his hands on a roll of brown "hospital" rubber sheet from which he had someone run up a very fetching pinafore dress for his charming wife.

I doubt they still sell them in the same way as they were sold decades ago (as a regular product in a store selling other bedding). But there are many latex producers that sell catsuits, gloves, corsets, that will also have bed covers and pillow cases. So don't worry, you can still get them in a wide variety of colours and thicknesses.

There is a guy from Netherland who sells them on Ebay if anyone is interested.

Bit more pricey than the ten bob a sheet our local herbalist shop used to charge but there you go, that's progress for you.
