Nylon Jacket

Post by Deleted User 5375 »

I remember these fondly from the 1970’s when they were a favourite of girls in secondary school. Never seen ones that are EXACTLY the same as those ones until now, the dark blue one lower down…

Brings back such memories. I remember back then everything smelt stronger. Cars didn’t have catalytic converters. Smoking was everywhere. People didn’t bath and shower as much. Nylon and plastic caused more perspiration. The aroma of the gorgeous Karen in her shiny blue nylon jacket standing next to me during gardening lessons in the warm greenhouse… exquisite!

I was at school at the same period as you, and there were loads of girls my own age and some of the younger women teachers wearing nylon cagoules, but I can't remember any with a pattern printed on them. The common colours were royal blue, navy blue, green and occasionally yellow. Take me back to those days!

I never saw patterned ones either. Navy blue was my favourite as the darker colour exacerbated the shiny look. There was also a fashion for the same jacket, but with white nylon sleeves, these were semi transparent and gave a lovely overall effect. Shame they weren’t plastic, but still very nice. If anyone can find images of the white sleeved, blue body, jackets that would be brilliant. I wonder if they were meant to mimic the American high school sports jackets often in leather/leatherette or satin for the ladies.

Hi, I totaly agree with the smell back then. In Hamburg Germany, we had a big sports gear store called Karstadt Sport. The rainwear Department was right next to the entrance. Every time you entered the store, you were immediately surrounded the smell of Nylon, PU-backed Nylon and PVC. It really hitted you. It was very arousing and I loved it. But back then, I was to shy to shop and try rainwear on. The wonderful intense smell will stay in my mind. What great years in the 70s/80s.
