Holiday in Germany

Post by Peter Haaswijk »

Hi all,
Yesterday we came back from a holiday in Oberstdorf, (Southern Germany )
We have had some rainy days ,(Not so much as I wanted  ..)
The first days I had my new yellow raincape (Ebay ) and my wife her blue cape (Fun Plastic )
During a heavy rainstorm I discovered that there was a leakage at the front and the arm slits of my cape, so in the evening at the appartment I taped it off with strong adhesive tape.
My wife thought that the cape was torn and wanted that I buyed another one , especcially because she did not like the yellow color .So a blue nylon cape was bought (Surely not my taste and color ) but there was nothing in PVC in the shop , only nylon stuff. :(
On another day ,when it had rained during many hours , we have visited the Breitachklamm (Breitachgorge ) that is a small river through high rocks and cascades at the side. You can walk there along safe paths. Such a visit is even recommanded by the local tourist information service in Oberstdorf to visit that gorge at rainy weather.
It is really a great happening ,a wild river ,rain and here and there a cascade from the side of the gorge which you have to pass.
Here capes proved that they are the only way to stay dry ! Umbrellas are not usable ,because here and there the rocks are very low ,so you have to duck , to prevent bumping the head.
Also rainjacks are not really watertight in those circumstances, only a cape.! 8-)

On another dry day , we saw a man wearing a nylon raincoat and a southwester which was held by a plastic rain bonnet , what a sight!
Greetings ,Peter

I don't know what you mean , but even in one of the places in Germany with the most rain, people don't use ''special'' rainwear. In the streets of Oberstdorf you see only many people with umbrellas and nylon rainjackets ,or nothing .
A cape or poncho is very ,very seldom to be seen in the streets ,even that you can buy them in the sportshops. I have looked in some of them, but the collection is small, even in the bigger shops. Perhaps because of that Oberstdorf is based on the wintersport clothing. At two shops I saw a transparent PVC poncho hanging
outside the shop, and one red nylon poncho.
That was all. :(

I think thats because its not the fashion to wear pvc r plastic at the minute, topshop and other stores have tried but very few seem to be interested.

What I think is needed is a top celeb to wear pvc or plastic and it'll be in.

I think while people use their cars all the time, many people will just use an umbrella or light jacket. You only have to look at the festivals, where people are going to be out in the elements for 14 hours a day to see proper rainwear being worn.

That's why you see so many young women wearing rainwear, as they are pushing babies in buggies and kids to school rather than driving, especially in the UK now petrol is more expensive.
