Hello everyone! This is a very interesting topic, which I would like to share my experience.

I live in Norway, where many people wear heavy pvc raincoats in rain, or even if it's broadcasted rain that day, and full rainwear if they are riding their bike, so that makes my life easier than in other countries, when it comes to wearing rainwear in public. A couple of years ago I started wearing pu/pvc rainwear outside. I only had courage to wear rainwear in dark black, blue or green. Actually, there were a couple of times where people stared weirdly at me. In hindsight, I believe it was because I was wearing jacket and pants in same colour. This makes a bit strange appearance, as it may look somehow like a uniform. Probably, they were wondering what I was up to, which company I was working for, or something like that. So my advice would be: If you want to seek as little attention as possible, try pairing upper and lower part with different colours, for example green upper and black lower part. In that way you will get a more casual look.

Another interesting thing has happened lately. Two years ago I came out as trans non-binary. That opened the opportunity for me to experiment with feminine outfits. The raincoats I once found attractive on women, I now wear publicly myself. I believe that since I wear feminine rainwear outfits, my rainwear is more "masked". Before people may have thought: "look at that guy wearing heavy rainwear, and it's hardly raining," while they now may think: "look at that person wearing a feminine outfit. A bit uncommon, but I guess I should be supportive, given the time we live in ..." etc, etc. The fact that it's a rainwear outfit is in that way forgotten. Of course, most likely, they don't think anything at all.

Also, the fact that I'm queer makes me even more careless of what people think of me. I'm trans, I wear dresses, I might as well wear rainwear. Actually, it has changed to such a degree that I enjoy when people look (to an exhibitionistic degree). They probably stare at me because I'm so pretty ;) A very wise person (my girlfriend) once said: you look pretty in an outfit if you feel pretty in it. So wear whatever you want with confidence, and you will shine like a star. Especially in shiny rainwear :D

Went out three times in the rain yesterday (twice to local parks and late in the evening around my local area) wearing my cotton backed yellow PVC thigh length raincoat, black PU over trousers and wellies. Spoke to several people whilst in the parks including a young lady in a pink PU raincoat in the morning. We agreed how sensible our shiny rainwear was and walked together, talking, for 5 or 10 minutes

I’ve just put my super shiny black pvc Benetton mackintosh on that I brought in the selfridges sale a couple of years ago (£150 down to £75, thus I brought the red one too!!) and just added my flat thigh high black pvc boots (my green wellies just don’t go with the Mac) along with my black pvc bucket hat and my black pvc gloves in my pocket too as I just love being fully pvc’d up!! Do I care??? No it’s pouring down and I’ll keep dry. Have to admit, dressed up like I’m feeling rather horny. Would make my day if I bumped into someone like you Sarah pvc or one of you other members on here to have a chat, walk together and maybe some mackintosh fun together….
That is a fabulous outfit...love to bump into you !! xx

I think this idea of needing to get up the courage to wear shiny rainwear in public is a problem of the modern age in which we live. I still own a long Rainstar PVC raincoat that I bought years ago and still have the plastic carrying pouch that came with it, with a picture on the front of a man carrying a briefcase wearing the mack partly undone to reveal a business suit, and smart shirt and tie. As a young man in my first job I often arrived at the office dressed like this having travelled either on a motor scooter or by tube and no-one at work ever made a comment.

With the weather so changeable at the moment I have worm my PVC raincoat to the shops. I am the only one. Everyone else dresses as if it is a normal hot August day in England and I do get funny looks if it happens to be one of those moments that the sun is poking it’s head out. But as soon as it clouds over no funny looks.

A city with lots of train and bus options still works well for rainwear and wellies and glad to be living near one. Wet train stations and waiting outside for trains help keep rainwear needs happen.

Rural outdoor work helps too.

The folks that hop in a car within a garage attached to the house and drive to a workplace with garage has unfortunately cut down on hood rainwear usage.
