I have a three-quarter length black SBR guard's coat that I wear in the city whenever its raining or cold. Carrying it to work has made me lose my self consciousness and I now wear it whenever I can and I've never had a bad reaction from anybody.
I think the trick is that it's a simple coat, could without closer inspection be mistaken for a shiny leather coat, and most importantly I now feel confident wearing it.

A lot of it is about confidence, although there are some too obviously girly raincoats I won't (can't) wear in public
