Hi,
I think because the material was not strong in practice and could easily be torn.
And after the 50/60 's years people bought cars and had not to walk to a bus stop in the rain.
These causes are some of the reasons ,there are more I think .

Indeed, lifestyles change. When you had to walk to a bus stop, walk to school, walk to the shops, whatever else then a plastic raincoat was kinda handy. plus plastic was the material of the time, after all nylon is a form of plastic. Wasnt it wonderful that you could have the nylon shirt that virtually needed no ironing, sadly made you sweaty as hell which is why natural fibres became popular again. Plus of course if you were going out for the day using the bus the plastic raincoat was handy to have as the weather may have turned, and people would put them on if it turned cooler even if it didnt actually rain, it was perhaps all someone had with them. Having a car meant that situations were different. You could take stuff with you without having to cart it around plus if the weather became bad you could escape it. The bus wouldnt run an hour early if i started to rain.

Its fun when you need to be out in the rain & are given a legitimate excuse / reason to wear Plastic / PVC
Dog walking for one - an innocent healthy pursuit - but oh what pleasure can be gained by wearing the correct clothing!!

Biggest "kick" I got was being able to wear PVC U Like mac for the two days (off & on) of last years Goodwood Revival - I seemed the only one not upset at the rain......

not just lifestyle; the distance between buildings on college campuses is the same now as the 70s; and even in the 70s girls with cars were far more likely to wear slickers; girls who took the bus usually had umbrellas with more traditional raincoats
