Nothing wrong at all with wearing as much Hazchem pvc as possible, Hazrainsuitman6 !
I wish we all had to wear it now and again. I had to wear a really thick White shiny thick PVC full Hazchem suit once during my Navy service, with an NATO S6 respirator for six hours on top of Portsdown hill in Hampshire.

It was raining really hard as well, but the suit was so thick I hardly noticed !

Wish I could have kept it but had to give it back, shame !

Hi guys

Just read the report, what a total load of garbage, its full of crap and scaremongering and I had to laugh where they "suggest" alternative suppliers! I wonder whether those suppliers paid for the report?

I have left my views on their website and suggested they find a more worth while project rather than going over old ground where concerns have been found and have now been dealt with.

Jeez, have some people got nothing better to do?

@Jjai I was joking  . I bet you were bummed about giving it back. PVC to us is an aphrodisiac, the feel of it getting us excited while the smell connotes wonderful memories. I enjoy wearing layers upon layers of it for hours on end. All I have to worry about is dehydration.

@pvcdreams There is a snobbery, elitism, fear, or holy-than-thou attitudes justified by anecdotes and faulty science. Sure their is a risk of plastic altering hormones, but this is extremely rare. It's like the fear of flying: plane crashes are rare, therefore the fear of it is unjustified. One should be more afraid of driving, yet most of us aren't. I know that the makers of fine PVC wear are confident enough to allow lovely English models go nude in their suits.

I have read somewhere about plastics made from corn. It is an idea, but why make something from food?

Guys

I've been stewing all morning about this article written by Yanks telling the rest of the world what to do.

The Yanks need to clean up their own back yard before they start having a pop at the Far East, for instance their CO emissions are astronomical, they still refuse to get in line with Europe over their CO output, they just do not have the inclination to sort it out. They are endorsing the continued De-forestation to make room for beef production which goes into those famous burgers which are killing more kids through obesity, high blood pressure and diabetes and yet there is no proof that the latest plasticisers actually cause any harm. In Europe we have to abide by the REACH regulations which control chemicals into Europe, the Americans do what they like. I'm not going to talk about gun laws in America because we already know about that scenario and what effect it has on innocent people.

I think that this organization whilst its intentions are good they are just jumping on a very old and well versed subject which admittedly there were problems in the past but the PVC industry has completely cleaned up its act and have come up with solutions which are now proven safe.

Just one last thought, even though DEHP (which is an old plasticiser now on the REACH list) and which was used for many years in Raincoat manufacturing is still being used for blood transfuse bags. In other words Blood is being stored in bags made from DEHP which then enters directly into the bloodstream, they have being doing this for over 30 years and no one has had any detrimental effect? if there were concerns it would of been stopped? I rest my case.

Sorry to be boring but I do get pissed off when people have a pop at our industry.

Gaz ;)

@pvcdreams With that knowledge, I'm perfectly fine wearing your company's rain and chemical suits.

I had to write 5000 words on phthalates and PVC for my degree. They could've at least picked somebody else for this topic... DEHP has been linked to loads of endocrine disrupting disorders however there is just not enough evidence at the moment for the US to add further restrictions to their plasticisers. However the slightest bit of correlation will make any group like this post an article, its rubbish evidence and shitty media, for now.

They've even linked pvc to obesity now.

The whole thing is typical of Americans. A ghastly race who want to dominate the world. Will happily liberate any country when they have oil up for grabs. Quite happy to keep prisoners without any fair trial in Guatamelo Bay. A country happy to kill each other with guns that it is their right to bear. Yet a country whos population are so dim they elect a B-movie actor, a lying womaniser (who redifened sex for his own convenience) and not one but 2 George Bush's as president (although the 2nd one did rig the election to be fair). We can only wonder who has had their pocket lined for the benefit of this report

I've noticed that since the banning of certain phthalate plasticisers from PVC inflatables and clear dome umbrellas, the material is no longer soft, rubbery, stretchy and supple, and it has the tendency to tear at the the welded seams, especially at low temperatures. Not long ago I bought a clear dome umbrella (the one with an 'I love rain' motif). The PVC material was somewhat 'brittle' (non-stretchy) and had the texture of paper. After the umbrella's first use , a massive tear had developed. The PVC used for the umbrella was a 'clarity POE PVC'. In short, the phthalate ban has resulted in a poorer quality PVC. I just hope that PVC rainwear and other garments are not subjected to the phthalate ban. Are any effective phthalate substitutes being developed?
