SBR or Latex?

Hi All!

I'm a Dominatrix in Australia and I was introduced to rainwear and PVC/rubberwear gear by a client (he's now my most treasured possession). It's a seemingly very British/European fetish and yet I have developed an absolute obsession with it (regardless of the fact that it hardly rains down here!).

I was recently hoping to purchase a latex mackintosh from Sealwear but I've heard they're either out of business or at the very least ripping people off. I'm now looking at the trench coat or Hussar mac from Weathervain, but I'm stumped on the difference between SBR and latex. Is SBR a rubberised fabric as compared to latex being pure rubber? And would anyone advise as to the pro's and con's of either?

Thank you in advance and I look forward to reading all of the fascinating conversations.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum and nice to hear you have been introduced to the wonderful world of rainwear this way.

Let me take a shot answering your question, although I am no expert so maybe someone with more hands-on experience will correct me.

SBR is a synthetic rubber which shares characteristics with natural rubber, but doesn't require the sap from rubber trees to be produced. The materials look different and move differently though, so its mostly based on personal preferences which one you want.

The differences in looks you will easily see in pictures, with the rubber having more shine and standing out more in public, and for the differences in movement I would recommend you check out some videos on social media: for an SBR raincoat see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovezLSM ... dex=7&t=0s (fetisheyes rubbergirls) and for a rubber coat see clips on the instagram profile of "sebastiancauchos" (designer of latex clothing, he has some clips of models wearing rubber raincoats on his profile).

Some things to consider:
1. the price of SBR raincoats is about double that of rubber raincoats.
2. SBR raincoats have actually been made for rain, while latex raincoats are fetish products. This means SBR will probably last longer and will require less maintenance (for rubber you will need to clean it regularly, keep it out of the sun and very hot weather, cannot hang it on a plastic coat hanger, etc)
3. If you plan on using the raincoat for work: SBR raincoats are barely known outside of the UK, while there are a ton of people with a latex fetish
4. if you plan on using the raincoat for normal use, the rubber one will stick out more as fetish wear so SBR will be better suitable
5. a latex raincoat you can buy anywhere while for SBR you will have a few british sites to pick from only

So from a commercial standpoint i would recommend you go for rubber, just because there will be more demand for it. If you like the material you can always extend your wardrobe with matching clothes like a rubber catsuit, a corset, masks, hats, gloves, etc.

Many years ago there were two types of rubber mackintosh, the one being SBR, Shiny Black Rubber on a layer of usually brown material, the other was know as Double Texture having two layers of similar material with a layer of rubber in between. They obviously looked entirely different but both had lovely rubber smell, the SBR being stronger. My brother had both bought him by an aunt. I loved them.
As far as latex it is what it says, purely rubber without any material involved. The SBR is much more durable. In choosing which type there comes the question of looks and whether you just want it for fashion or if one material excites you more than the other. For me it is the SBR every time.

Was your brother anticipating such a gift? Did he welcome it?

Thank you BobbyValore and Johnnyrbr!

This was exactly the information I was looking for! Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference in pictures. The fact is, I'm a rubber fetishist from way back, so of course the latex trench coat is an absolute must - but I also love classic rainwear, so equally, the SBR mac is essential! The only way to address this conundrum is to get both! And that doesn't even address the third option - the rubber Celine cape from RIMO Fashion in Germany - talk about heavy rubber rainwear!

Way back, before the sixties, I remember SBR meant 'shiny black rubber'. As johnnyrbr states it was wigan cloth with a polished rubber surfacing on one side.

I simply love the lady in your first video, if only more women would wear long macs like she is wearing, both shiny and matte she looks amazing together with her boots, hat and gloves, i would happily wear my pvc long coat and go out for a walk with any female who dresses like that :D

Agree with Tim Raincoat, if only ..... Sadly I don't think we shall ever get back to those days where women [and men] wear 'Proper rainwear. Thanks also to BobbyValore for the two references he gave. I love to see the pld type of SBR mackintoshes.
As far as Rives question, no he didn't expect them as we were only young. When he had the SBR one I was only 3/4 years old and he was about 8. I loved it as I used to bury my face in it and stroke it all over. I think he was about 11 and went into Senior school when our aunt bought him the double texture one. I remember with that one I use to smell it and because all the seems were sealed with a rubber strip I used to stroke that as well. You can see from this where my passion for rubber came from.

Thanks for the reply. So what era did this happen? I know what it was like to have rainwear compulsorily acquired and supplied and if he was the only boy dressed like this It must have been difficult for him.
