Hi folks.
I want to ask a question.
Why do people not wear PVC/PLASTIC/LATEX rainwear in public.
Wee Story.
This morning I was in the city with a friend of mine, we'd drove in and as we approached the car park the heavens opened. I knew by the look of the sky this rain was gonna be on for a while. However Debs to the rescue. I said "its ok I have a couple of raincoats in the back of the car". I did get a tingle as I thought about my friend in one of my plastic rain coats.
But she replied. "Im sorry Debs I can't wear that as I will only sweat in it. I will use my umbrella". I was disappointed but I wore mine anyway.
Why is it that ladies refuse to wear plastic coats?? It must be the fear of sweating.
Very Sad Debs.
Rainwear. Sweats.
Re: Rainwear. Sweats.
as your friend so rightly says in warm weather it can be rather sweaty to wear plastic rainwear. If you are going to end up as wet from sweat as from the rain then it makes it a pointless exercise doesn't it. Much as I love my rainwear I do find it rather useless in this current warm weather with sweating
Re: Rainwear. Sweats.
It's perfectly true that pvc raincoats can make you sweat, but you'd be unlikely to get wetter from the sweat than the rain - unless you had over-active sweat glands!
Debs, I don't think that is the only reason they are not worn in public much. Some people don't like the smell of them, others say they are too restrictive, but mainly it's a question of fashion. Glad to hear you wear yours, though.

Re: Rainwear. Sweats.
It seems NOBODY wears proper rainwear anymore. While I take great delight in wearing my various raincoats, trenchcoats, and rainsuits in public, others choose to wear "hoodies" - thats right, cotton hooded sweaters. I show up in a store in head to toe raingarb - soaked and glistening and people are like "you're dressed for the rain today aren't you??? or " you look prepared for a thunderstorm!!!" Well no kidding!! Personally I don't care if I sweat a little bit, it's worth it. However, the summers in Canada are very dry anymore, we havent had rain in weeks- so needless to say I'm waiting!!

Hi Debs,
It seems only a select few of us have the satisfaction of wearing respectable not to say sensible rainwear when it rains, I have no doubt you looked sensational wearing yours out - What style & colour was it ?
I think the new British rainwear comprises of a T-shirt, jeans or even shorts and flip flops or thin style beach shoes these days.
The few who wear plastic or rubber raingear seem to exist only in fashionable magazines or pre 1980s films unfortunately.
I will always wear a raincoat out, alright when it is warmer then you would only need a light Plastic PVC-u-like style rain mac but normally being colder in the UK I always wear a SBR rubber trenchcoat which goes with anything casual or more formal.
Even if the shops were filled with rainwear in PVC or rubber, I am afraid that most of the civilised world now have become fashion sheep and sensible individuality is neither encouraged or used so no-one would buy it anyway !
I have normally got quite postive remarks - mostly by women and then by normally middle aged ones who can remember when people wore what was sensible when I wear nice rainwear. I bought a bright Yellow heavy PVC hooded fisherman style raincoat in Plymouth made by Sea Storm two weeks ago for £54 - a bargain, from Gaelforce UK and I love wearing it around.
Don't be sad Debs, many forum members on here, not least myself would love to go walking with you anywhere dressed in wonderful shiny plastic rainwear !
Take care
James

Re: Rainwear. Sweats.
I think the problem is two fold. One, back in the 70's/80's/90's when pvc & plastic rainwear was king, there was no such thing as Goretex or breathable fabric to make rainwear so pvc, rubber or plastic was the waterproof choice. Second, everyone drives now, so people think "Oh well i'm only going to be in the rain for a few minutes, i'll just grab an umbrella. Go to a Theme park, Festival, Car boot sale, market and you are much more likely to see rainwear. Yes most of it wll be tech fabrics but some will be pvc etc.
Unless it becomes fashionable to wear it people will go for what they see as the easy option. Rita Ora and others are trying!!
P.s. Debs would love to see a pic or two of you in your rainwear!!
Have fun

Re: Rainwear. Sweats.
sweating is just an excuse. women wore slickers in the 70s because they were popular. my girlfriend in college started wearing a slicker only because other girls she associated with did. getting wet had nothing to do with it. an umbrella was considered to be something old ladies carried.
and I noticed at that time that girls with cars were much more likely to wear slickers than girls who took the bus.

Re: Rainwear. Sweats.
yesterday all day raining in Munich, Germany. I saw a nice young lady in her mid 20s wearing shiny green rubberboots and she also had a glass clear large brollie. But no PVC raincoat. So she was fashion conscious, because I saw many combinations of shiny wellies and shiny (coloured) clear brollies. So PVC and plastic are still "in". But not as coats, unfortunately.
