Hi RRC:

I was out in town the other day, and by luck in one of the charity shops found me a cagoule.

It’s similar to the one I already have, it’s also a Regatta but has the old logo on it and the materiel feels ever so slightly thicker and the taped seams seem shinier.

Anyway I was browsing round some outdoor shops like Blacks and Trespass and quite honestly it got me thinking that decent cagoules like that are harder to come by these days.

The only two “proper” cagoules I know about are Regatta Stormbreaks or the Portwest ones, Regatta Strombreaks are sold by loads of places online so not all is lost.

But aside from those two , most of the ones I see in stores now-a-days are either cloth lined and are pretty much normal coats, or there pack-a-mack crap with the boring thin materiel and the free pack bag thing.

So whilst I’m not exactly looking to buy a new one I would like to know what else is on the market out of interest, I have some pictures I took of mine I bought to explain my definition of a proper cagoule to (sorry about the poor picture quality)

Animal do proper cagoules still with new design each year, they are thicker and unlined, still have a bag but are much thicker and properly waterproof with tape seems. These guys do them mail order, i bought one last week.

Also kway still do the famous claude and leon cagoules, peter storm storm shield ones in millets are thicker than the old kag-in-a-bag ones from weather wear which i have to say, i do have one in nearly every colour they did and in my fav colours a couple of.

Regatta are the closest i suppose, but a quick search on ebay and there is loads of proper old school caggies to choose from! or as you have found out, the charity shops often have them in, i did a tour of all the charity shops in glos and cheltenham i could find one day a few years ago and cMe back with a record 8 cagoules of varing types

The majority of new Cags are PU lightweight ones. The "industrial" section of some cash and carry sellers sometimes have Portwest or DRI rainsuits which are very similar to the old Regatta cags but they have a very strong smell of chemical about them and they feel a bit rigid as if they are PU/PVC and they tend to have rubbish sleeves that aren't elasticated at all.

While I'm here has anybody encountered delamination of Regatta's later cagoules which isn't down to poor washing? I've had a few that merely got wet and have started to bubble in places as a result. It seems to affect the 1990s ones with self coloured zips and the blue and purple two tone ones, in other words the nice heavy PVC/Nylon ones. Is it an age thing?

Possibly. I had a longer cut one in dark blue delam completely after a wash on cold cycle.

Green peter storms seem to do the same thing
