I am taking a trip at the end of this year to Australia, with a stopovers in Singapore and Hong Kong. I haven't been to Singapore before (apart from the airport) and wondered whether the humidity means it will be too hot and sticky to wear a plastic mac. I have seen photos of people wearing plastic ponchos but I just wondered whether anyone has had any experience of rainwear in Singapore.

Also. what if it rains in Hong Kong ? I would imagine plastic rainwear would not be uncommon there. Anyone know from experience ?

I have been to Australia before but only saw rain once, when we indoors, so didn't have an opportunity to wear a mac.

I would also be interested to know if I would be likely to find any plastic rainwear in the shops in any of these three countries and, if so, where should I look ? Of course, I mean proper plastic rainwear not the horrible thin, flimsy disposable type.

I would be grateful for any knowledge that anyone may have.

In Singapore it tends to rain regularly around 4.30pm. It gets so humid that the air can't take any more moisture and it pours down for half an hour or so.

Hong Kong is not so humid and there is less chance of decent heavy rain. In fact, I've never experienced rain there but it does have its wet season.

As for Australia, just look at the rain there in the past few days; 39 inches in two days! That's serious but it mostly in the North East but beware - you can get crocodiles and sharks in the streets in the most extreme conditions. Oz is a land of extremes, forest fires to torrents and floods and droughts. Of course they have suitable protective rain gear in the areas where they need it but you'll not find much in Adelaide or Perth
